Hello Inclusion: A Festival of Music, Love, and Community
Date: July 14, 2024 // By: Nelson Perez
This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending Hello Inclusion: A Festival of Possibilities, organized by Daniel’s Music Foundation at the historic Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. This event, held in celebration of Disability Pride Month, was an extraordinary experience that left me feeling inspired, welcomed, and full of joy. The festival truly lived up to its name by embodying the essence of inclusion, providing a space where everyone could be themselves and enjoy a day filled with music, creativity, and connection.
A Warm Welcome and Spacious Layout
From the moment I arrived, I felt the warmth and love that permeated the festival grounds. The layout was thoughtfully designed with plenty of space to move around, making it easy for everyone to navigate comfortably. There were no long lines, and the atmosphere was relaxed and accommodating, allowing attendees to enjoy the various activities at their own pace. This thoughtful arrangement ensured that the festival was accessible and enjoyable for all, including those with sensory sensitivities.
Music, Workshops, and More
The festival offered a wide range of activities that catered to diverse interests and abilities. Here are some highlights:
- Live Performances: The main stage featured incredible performances by musicians with disabilities, showcasing their talents and celebrating their contributions to the arts. The lineup included inspiring artists like Ryan Niemiller, a comedian from America’s Got Talent, and other talented singers and musicians.
- Drum Circles: Led by Sampson Hellerman of the band Ripe, the drum circles were a hit, offering participants the chance to create rhythmic music together. These sessions were both energizing and therapeutic, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
- Songwriting Workshops: These workshops provided a platform for attendees to express themselves through music, guided by experienced songwriters. It was a fantastic opportunity for aspiring musicians to learn and create in a supportive environment.
- Dance Parties: The dance parties were vibrant and inclusive, encouraging everyone to let loose and enjoy the music. It was a joyous sight to see people of all abilities dancing together and having a great time.
- Creative Arts Experience: This area offered various arts and crafts activities, allowing attendees to explore their creativity and take home a piece of their own artwork.
- Accessible Instrument Demos: These demos showcased a variety of instruments adapted for accessibility, giving everyone the chance to try their hand at making music.
- Community Expo Area: The expo featured booths from various organizations, providing valuable resources and information about disability awareness and inclusion.
A Memorable Evening with Jason Mraz
The festival concluded with an unforgettable concert by Jason Mraz and Ripe on the Pavilion stage. Jason’s performance was a perfect ending to a day filled with music and celebration, leaving everyone with a sense of unity and happiness.
